FAQs

What is the function of a Battery?
The function of the battery in a vehicle is to store and supply electricity. When the vehicle is used, the motor uses the electrical energy from the battery. As a result the battery’s stored electrical energy depletes. This discharged battery can be recharged using the normal house-hold AC (Alternate Current) with the help of a charger. The ampere-hour rating of a battery determines the storage capacity of electrical charge in that battery. The AH is a measurement of current - 1 AH means the battery can supply 1 amp of current continuously for 1 hr. Battery is major component in maintaining the performance of the vehicle and therefore proper maintenance of the battery is very important.

How long does it take to charge the battery?
Battery charge times will vary between manufacturers, models and battery types. Typically, the initial charge will take 6-12 hours. Sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries will take 6-8 hours.
What types of batteries are available?
Battery technology continues to improve every day. Currently, there are 2 main types of batteries used in electric bicycles:
  • Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) - Lithium Ion batteries are the highest quality batteries available in today's market. Although they cost the most money (upfront), they have the longest life and the lowest weight. Because they last 3-4 times longer than cheaper battery types, the higher cost will be negated over time.
  • Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) - Sealed lead acid batteries are the cheapest form of battery technology, they have the shortest life and are extremely heavy when compared to other battery types.
How many miles will the battery last for?
It depends on a few factors and conditions which are:
  • How much effort you put in yourself!
  • The chosen assistance level.
  • The capacity of the battery (measured in Amp Hours [Ah]).
  • How 'hilly' it is where you're riding.
  • Rider weight.
  • Charging and discharging tips.
 What is 'Ah'?
Ah (Amp Hours) basically denotes the capacity (fuel tank) of a battery. The higher the Ah rating, the longer the batteries will last and therefore the greater the range. The higher the Ah rating the better, although higher Ah batteries cost and weigh more.
How long will the battery last?
Battery life will vary depending on the type of battery while sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries last between 500-700 charges.

To extend the life of your battery, charge the battery regularly and promptly after each use. If you store your bike for prolonged periods of time, both the batteries and charger should be stored at temperatures above freezing and recharged every 4-6 weeks.
Does the battery recharge when you are cycling?
Currently, most electric cycles do not have regeneration due to the extra cost and weight of the technology; plus regeneration will only give you about 10% charge back into the battery at best.
